Yes! A huge street celebration The Day of the Dead was due to happen in our home city of Exeter a few years' back - certainly well pre-Covid - but it mysteriously disappeared of the city's calendar. I've no idea why it was pulled. Expense, possibly, as it was going to be an ambitious and rowdy day of celebration.

As I'm writing this, I'm suddenly wondering if this was something that happened in Exeter, New Hampshire... and I was the wrong side of the Atlantic!

I've never been but those Mexicans look so fiery and expressive with the way they do it. Would love to see local versions going on around the British Isles. We must have had some pretty vibrant Celtic celebrations of the underworld, and I'm pretty sure there are people reading this who know a thing or two about it. Jen from the School of Myth is very interested in the question of how we relate to our dead as a culture. Will have to invite her along.

I was in China on their day of the dead was celebrated. Its a family affair, and a very happy occasion but no street celebrations. The families visit their family graves and take with them models of things they may need in their new 'life' everything from pots and pans to buildings etc. They also take replica money to make sure their loved ones don't run short. It is a universal and much loved day in the Chinese calendar, and definitely soulful and community based. A happy day.
